The following is a column by Mark Shiver, host of the “What Matters in North Carolina” podcast.
For all the bluster on the Left concerning their alleged “caring about children,” there is one place in North Carolina where children are increasingly at risk. Charlotte, “the Queen City,” has become the epicenter for indoctrinating children and exposing them to ideas that are at the least age-inappropriate, and that some pediatricians have called “child abuse.”
On May 23, 2016, the Charlotte Observer editorial board opined that women and girls might have to overcome their discomfort with the thought of male genitalia in girls’ locker rooms and vice versa.
A natural question after reading such a statement might be, “Does this sound like something someone who genuinely cares about children would say?” The answer for many in North Carolina would be a resounding, “No.”

The newspaper’s editorial board, as an advocate for Charlotte’s bathroom ordinance and as an opponent of HB2, was trying to make the argument that accepting transgender persons in the bathroom of the opposite sex might be uncomfortable, but folks will just have to deal with that discomfort in the quest of equality.
Within the past two weeks, the Charlotte-Mecklenburg School District (CMS), under the guise of National Child Abuse Prevention Awareness Month, offered a curriculum that advanced the LGBT political agenda. As part of that curriculum, the district was planning to have first-graders read a book titled Jacob’s New Dress. It is about a boy and his wearing of a dress.
Pushback initially from a concerned teacher and counselors caused the school district to change the plan and replace the book. Coupled with last year’s use of the “Gender Unicorn,” a tool used to replace traditional gender pronouns with transgender oriented ones, it is obvious that educating children is not nearly as important to these folks in Charlotte as is indoctrinating them in behavior and lifestyle choices.
The replacement book titled, “Red: A Crayon’s Story,” conveys a similar message although with less of an overt title.
On the Tuesday, March 28 edition of the “What Matters in North Carolina” podcast, Tami Fitzgerald, executive director of NC Values Coalition, voiced concerns about the inappropriateness of the content of Jacob’s New Dress for six-year-old children, and the goal of the book and curriculum in indoctrinating students in transgenderism.
Fitzgerald said, “It’s a way to indoctrinate young children about transgenderism and normalizes it. I just think a lot of parents would object to that.” Fitzgerald also gave an outline of the entities involved with trying to expose and corrupt the minds of children with these notions.
She said, “As we dug a little deeper we found that this curriculum was brought to the Charlotte-Mecklenburg School System by a group called Time Out Youth, that apparently has some connection to Equality NC, the statewide LGBT group which is a local affiliate of the national group the Human Rights Campaign. And that the Human Rights Campaign has developed a curriculum called ‘Welcoming Schools.’”
There has been an individual hired by Equality NC and Time Out Youth to train CMS teachers in this indoctrination curriculum. Fitzgerald noted this and that, per the Equality NC website, Bank of America is partially funding this program.
Fitzgerald said, “It’s frightening that the CEO of Bank of America, Brian Moynihan, seems to be very involved in the discussions going on in the legislature about HB2 at the same time they are funding a program in Charlotte-Mecklenburg School system to basically indoctrinate young children and normalize the transgender lifestyle.”
In a report published in January 2017 by the American College of Pediatricians, gender ideology was recently reported to “harm children.” Yet public school systems like CMS persist in exposing young children to things that can harm them.
A flustered mom in line at a busy store who might pop her child on the bottom for misbehaving would face scrutiny and possibly the loss of her child at the hands of bureaucrats. But, this same “keep the children safe” mantra does not apply when leftists want to expose them to sexually inappropriate notions and ideology.
Little wonder that parents are seeking school choice to keep their kids safe, not only from things like bullying, but also from the twisted notions foisted on us by corporations and educators alike.
