Tom Fitton, president of Judicial Watch, spoke Saturday at the Civitas Institute’s 2017 Conservative Leadership Conference. Listening to Fitton was like watching an endless string being pulled, as he told of the many areas of influence that Judicial Watch has had over the past few years in an effort to make government accountable.
The first bit of string was a request for documents related to the tragic incident at Benghazi, which when pulled led to the realization that there were no emails included in the documents received. This led to a request for the emails, leading to serious questions about Clinton’s handling of sensitive national security information.
Fitton said, “We have conducted the most significant non-governmental investigations in recent history — Hillary Clinton’s emails, Benghazi. The FBI followed our lead with Hillary Clinton, and though she was not indicted, she did face a measure of accountability on election day.”
He said that the Left is viciously attacking President Trump in an effort to keep Clinton under the radar of scrutiny. Fitton said, “The Left has not accepted that she has lost. They are attacking Trump to deflect attention away from Clinton.”
Focusing on government in the broader sense, Fitton talked about the upcoming budget process, and how it is likely that a trillion-dollar budget will be voted on in three days. “That’s not real oversight,” Fitton said. “Then the agencies will get the money and won’t want to disclose what they do with it.”
“We’re facing a crisis in Washington, but it isn’t the president that’s causing the problem. We’re in a revolutionary period led by the progressive Left. They want to upend the country as we know it, and they’re breaking the rules in order to do it.”
Talking about North Carolina and election integrity, Fitton said. “You’ve been undermined by your own governor. You’ve been attacked by the Justice Department. You’ve been attacked by the Left.” He said that voter ID is extremely popular among the citizens, and encouraged the state’s lawmakers not to give up on voter ID legislation.
“The Left doesn’t want voter ID. The other issue is certifying that someone is actually a citizen before they are registered to vote,” Fitton said. “Why are they opposed to that? Because the Left wants to steal elections if necessary.” He added that the Left plays the race card, patronizing minorities and offensively insinuating that they cannot figure out how to get an ID so they can vote.
As Judicial Watch has effectively used Freedom of Information Act requests at the federal level, Fitton said that it is a useful tool at the state and local government level, also. He commended the Civitas Institute and those in attendance for being involved in the fight to hold government accountable.
